CHAPTER 16

The map in front of Holly wasn’t something she was proud of having drawn, but at least it made sense. She finished writing the Miller children’s names inside of her poor rendition of their house, then put her pencil down.

There. It was done.

She’d drawn the whole block, marked each house by making squares, then colored in the ones that would be important to her as well as the fences. She even tried to map out the trees that sat in the back yards from her memory, but she knew that was a pretty sketchy estimate. She was trying to add some realism to her drawing, and she’d even scribbled down where Abra’s shed had once stood.

“I never knew you were an artist,” Lydia said to her.

Holly just looked at her.

Wade traced a finger along the houses. “Is this accurate?”

Holly shrugged. “Close enough.” She reached blindly for a chip from the bowl sitting next to her on the table, then she scribbled down another name. Well, not so much a name as a nickname. She wrote “Old man.”

Levi leaned over to read it and snorted. “I think I would have put prehistoric old man in. That describes him a lot better.”

Wade laughed. “What does a prehistoric old man have to do with this?”

“Actually, he was a Precambrian old man,” Levi muttered.

“Fine. What does a Precambrian old man have to do with this? No way he has kids who could have done it. And I doubt grandkids, either.”

Holly tossed the pen down on the table. “To be honest, not a lot. But he was the first person in the neighborhood I talked to today, and he seemed like he had a good heart.”

She didn’t tell them that she was pretty sure he would have dismissed her theory and said she needed to find some facts to pull together before going around and bothering people in the neighborhood.

“And there aren’t any other kids on the block?” Wade asked.

Levi shrugged. “I had a few people tell me about their children who were away at college.” He shot Holly a narrow-eyed look. “Do you know how hard it was to pretend that I cared?” He shuddered dramatically. “I even acted like I was writing notes.”

Holly raised her hands in surrender. “Don’t take this out on me. Lydia was the one who suggested we split up.”

“Lydia didn’t promise to buy lunch and then pretend to forget on the way home.” He crossed his arms.

“I’ll order a pizza in a second,” she promised.

“How about Chinese food instead?” Although his smile was sweet and innocent, she didn’t believe it for a second.

“Chinese is expensive!”

He slumped down in his seat. “But it’s so good!”

Holly sighed and pointed toward her room. “Go get my wallet. And you’re calling them, not me.”

He stuck his hand out. “Deal.”

She met it with her own and squeezed tightly, trying to show him how she felt about this new bargain they’d just struck.

He hissed and pouted at her as he sauntered off down the hallway.
